These are practices that help a person achieve deeper states of meditation and awareness. In this post I will briefly mention some of these practices and end with some commentary on the possible effects and benefits of these practices. In other words, why bother? 😉
In deeper trance states you have access to more information than what you sense with your normal ordinary senses (our traditional five senses). The intent of the practices listed here varies, but in general they are spiritual in nature, raise your vibration to very high states, and help to evolve group and individual consciousness. You may see, hear and see things that feel “crazy” or challenge your beliefs. It is recommended that you work with groups and/or a coach for these practices to give yourself additional support.
Generally, participating in groups can help you achieve a deeper meditative and/or trance state (depending upon the group and the intention) because the group energy can help carry you deeper.
Caution: some of these resources are extremely high in vibration. Practice good grounding techniques, ensure you are in a safe location and do not listen while you are operating machinery or if you are prone to seizures, etc. Some of these resources may create spontaneous reactions such as opening your Third Eye, kundalini type of clearing experiences, and paranormal / multidimensional experiences.
My own personal opinion –
1) You have free will and can say “no” to paranormal and unusual experiences.
2) If and when you are “ready” for deeper experiences, it will happen for you. Allow experiences to unfold for you. If you do not have someone to discuss your experiences and help put them in context, it can be confusing and/or disorienting. The first time I had a kundalini experience, I had no idea what was happening and fortunately, a friend was able to help me. I have paid this forward many, many times – joyfully – as people start to open their awareness and experience.
So here is a list of additional practices you may want to explore with some background on each:
Shamanic Journeying – Shamanism in some form is present in every culture around the world, and it has helped with evolution and intuitive development. Journeying is a powerful meditative state that helps us work more deeply with intuitive and spiritual guidance. Prolonged hypnotic drumming is used to promote relaxation and the experience of a trance-like visionary awareness. Through journeying, we may find that our normal world is not the most “real” world we can experience.
Earthing – This has become popular as of late. The principle behind this practice is to connect deeply with the frequency and harmonics of the earth (as mentioned in the last post), and there are many stories of how this has had healing effects and reversed illness. This can also have a powerful meditative effect. It can be as simple as lying on a blanket on the ground and energetically “deepen” into the earth using visualization.
Energy Healing and Consciousness – This is working with more subtle energies in and around your body. You can work with an energy practitioner to help balance, stabilize and charge your field which often helps people feel calm, balanced and centered. This works through resonance – as we meet each other and co-mingle our energy fields, we naturally come into resonance with each other. According to Heartmath and their research, this usually happens within 5 to 15 minutes. Valerie Hunt did extensive research with energy practitioners and verified this alignment and coherence. Clearing and repairing the chakras can open your senses and help you achieve deeper states of meditation.
Channeling – this occurs when a person is able to communicate with a consciousness that is not in physical form. Mediumship is communicating with loved ones who have passed back into spirit form. Many people share stories of communicating with loved ones and receiving lovely reminders – smelling roses, seeing familiar objects, etc.
People who channel may be communicating with consciousnesses that are from other dimensional planes (angels, ascended masters, saints, avatars, etc.). For example, Bernadette Soubirous was a 14 year old peasant girl spoke with a vision of a “lady” and it was later deemed to be Our Lady of Lourdes.
The channel is accessing higher spiritual knowledge and the information shared is from a “soul’s” perspective. The energy of the words may be more important than the actual words communicated.
People who journal as part of their meditation practice often connect with one of these consciousnesses or their Higher Self (an aspect of their Divine Self). Clearing our field and opening our chakras can help us open our intuition, access more information and wisdom, live a more peaceful life. Anyone can do it – truly.
Kundalini Meditation / Yoga / Mudras – this is a specific form of practice that encourages the release of the “serpent” energy at the base of your spine when the Ida (left) and Pingala (right) energies are balanced. They clear and energize the chakras all the way up the body and the sushumna (infinite cosmic energy) is also activated and connected to the earthly energies (Ida and Pingala). The release of the energies can assist with awakening. It can happen spontaneously. It is suggested that you learn and practice this with an experienced practitioner
Breath Work – this is a family of techniques that use the breath to stimulate the energy system. Here is a short YouTube video called “Why Breathwork Matters” by Andrew Weil MD discussing the physiological aspects and benefits of using breath work. His explanation is similar to techniques taught by Heartmath.
This is a clip from the film Holotropic Breathwork with Klaus John that shows a more intense release of energy that can occur and suggested that this work is supervised with a trained and experienced practitioner. These techniques can be quite intense and release kundalini energy and/or emotional experiences, past trauma, etc.
Transcendental Meditation – this is a simple, natural technique practiced 20 minutes twice each day while sitting comfortably with the eyes closed. It is only taught by trained facilitators. The TM technique allows your mind to easily settle inward, through quieter levels of thought, until you experience the most silent and peaceful level of your own awareness — pure consciousness.
Reading Sacred/Spiritual Writings – there are many source of “high” vibration literature. Personally, I have experienced spontaneous periods of awakening by reading some of these texts. Traditional sources include the Bible, Torah, Qur’an, The Vedas, Bhagavad Gita, Tao Te Ching, and others. There are more recent writings, discoveries and varied sources which include (but certainly not limited to):
- The “Daily Download” by Tom Kelly at Soul of Yoga in Encinitas CA
- A Course In Miracles (now in the public domain and free; the official site is here), writings from the Theosophical Society (a book that has been a very helpful reference is The Ascended Masters and Their Retreats), Alice Bailey, Pathwork lectures by Eva Pierrakos (or books by Susan and Donovan Thesenga which provide narrative, such as The Undefended Self: Living the Pathwork), writings of Joshua David Stone
- writings of Sathya Sai Baba and Sri Ramana Maharshi (mentioned later)
- Seeds of the Spirit and other meditations by Barbara Brennan
- The Gnostic Gospels discovered in Nag Hammadi (where “gnosis” means “an intuitive process of knowing oneself”)
- Self study program from Self Realization Fellowship / authored by Paramahansa Yogananda
- Books by Pema Chodron, Thich Nhat Hanh (many)
- Your Divine Heritage: Experience Your Divine Love by Nikki Cobb
Some groups have cast aspersions on some of these works. I encourage you to follow your own intuition and guidance, if any of these resonate with you. You may not now, but as you advance these readings may be more meaningful for you. Working with these resources can help raise your own vibration, helping you to access deeper wisdom.
Mindlessness Meditation – in mindfulness, we are encouraged to notice what we experience. In mindlessness, we begin to question the validity of the mind and the source of reality.
Sri Ramana Maharshi taught self-enquiry, to focus on the I-thought to recognize the source, The Self. Where does this “I” emerge from? “Who am I? Consciousness itself is I” These two writings are available for free on the Internet: Who Am I? by Sri Ramana Maharshi and Be As You Are by David Godman. For me personally, just reading these works created an opening in my own awareness.
A similar work is Loving What Is by Byron Katie. She teaches a method of self inquiry that helps to eliminate assumptions and beliefs to open our sight to the nature of reality. Byron Katie is said to be one of a few awakened beings that are alive at this time. Eckert Tolle is said to be another.
Chanting – listening to these chants can increase your vibration; they bring more light to your being and clear energetic blocks. I let some of these play in my healing space for several hours (on repeat) and when I walk in the room I can notice an immediate energetic effect – my vibration goes very high. I occasionally use these chants during healings with clients.
- Attend a local Kirtan event (Meetup.com may list local events). Kirtan is a form of devotional chanting and an integral component of Bhakti Yoga, the yoga of seeing and feeling the essence of the Divine Light in everyone and everything.
- Tom Kenyon – many recordings available, some for free (see “Free Gifts”). Truly a gifted sound healer in our time.
- Sri Karunamayi chanting (and teaching) Sri Devi Khadga Mala (a very sacred chant which transmits the energy of the highest divine consciousness) and Samputita Sri Suktam (a beautiful Vedic hymn that describes Divine Mother Lakshmi’s supreme love and compassion for her children) – http://www.manidweepa.org/mantra-chanting/ .
- Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra sung by Hein Braat (not the Dalai Lama, as claimed) https://soundcloud.com/mantramrityunjaya/dalai-lama-chanting
- Gayatri Mantra as chanted by Sai Baba, can be found on YouTube.
Energetic Activations and Initiations – such as those developed by Children of the Sun Foundation / Rites of Passage and I Am Avatar program. These are spiritual initiations to higher realms of consciousness. I used these meditations extensively and at night as I was drifting off to sleep. I could feel the energetic effects of using these meditations as it expanded my own energetic and spiritual container.
Transmissions – like channeling, some spiritual leaders / avatars actually communicate transmissions – higher spiritual energetic frequencies – by their presence and/or speaking. With them, we have the opportunity to enjoy the experience of Divine Grace embodied in a human being. Sri Ramana Maharshi often said that being in his presence was far more effective than any words he would say.
The practice of gazing is a transmission of pure grace. Braco is an international figure who often has local gazing events and on Braco.tv (sometimes for free).
Amma Sri Karunamayi is an avatar who transmits the grace of the Divine Mother and travels to the US for events. Matt Kahn at True Divine Nature is another who regularly “downloads” teachings and provides transmissions during his speaking sessions. He has a series of YouTube videos that are worth checking out.
Who Can I Trust?
You might be wondering – who can I trust? Are these people “the real deal”? I have offered resources that I can personally attest to, but I have also resonated with. You may not resonate with any in this list. You will have your own experience, discover who you resonate with and learn to trust your own inner wisdom.
By doing your own “work” – clearing your own field, using mindfulness and meditation to deepen your own wisdom – you can learn to trust your intuition and your own path of development and evolution. You may also want to check out my book “How to Choose an Energy Healer”. In this book, I do give you some practical advice (including an interview guide) on how to find and work with practitioners.
So what is the “bottom line” of pursuing these practices? They can open our awareness to other dimensions of reality beyond 3D consciousness, which is a belief in the absolute and concrete appearance of matter and mechanistic cause and effect.
It helps us transcend to 4D consciousnesses, which is the realm of deep internal spiritual inquiry, relaxation of the ego centered perception and the need for control, quantum possibilities, the development of intuition, the recognition of equanimity of all life and information, and the appearance of astral content from beyond the veil of our limited awareness and five senses. Intuition in particular is a huge benefit because we can learn to recognize and trust impulses that seem to come from a deeper wisdom. Living life with healthy intuition can help make life seem much more effortless.
So I want to pause here because I often get asked these questions: What about “negative energy” and entities? (Which often show up in the “astral” level) Can they be attracted to me? Is it safe? My practice has always been to focus on the highest, purest intention and vibration, and clear the effects of my ego as much as possible. I have never had a problem; I simply have never had a fear of this (other fears, yes; this, no ;-). I do encounter the presence of some things with my clients and simply help them to move on. Adam, my favorite shaman once said “It’s not negative energy, just energy not in the right place”. This has always been helpful to me and others. Be aware of what you feed and notice, including your fears and perceptions.
We can further transcend to 5D consciousness, which is multidimensional realization of our true Unitive nature. We are not the “we” we think we are – and opening our awareness to some of these writings and practices can help us broaden our experience and encourage our awakening. “Now” is the closest experience we have to eternity, which is our true nature and reality.
What is life like from this place? We live a much more peaceful, joyful and loving experience, and we are able to see the world from a much wider perspective. Life is experienced with much more effortlessness and with much more Divine Trust, faith and spiritual gnosis.
And, so someday we can truly answer the question “Who Am I? Consciousness itself is I”.
